Kira - 74
Kira scooped her arm around Vailâs back, taking most of his weight as he grunted his way into a sitting position on the bed. The sensors in the armadillo registered five pressure points. Five fucking ribs. Jesus, Vail didnât need the shit Leona was trying to spoon into him, he needed a burger. Several.
âHit me with it,â she said. âWhat did Perry say?â
Yeah, what did the ghost of my best buddy tell you, wizard? Christ. Donât even go there. Those thoughts were full of thorns. Perry was fine. Totes.
âIâm sorry, Kira.â Even with the egg-white eyes, Vail still managed to do doe-eyed well. Too well. Kira busied herself with a loose thread on the bed covers and Vail continued. âThey have organised a team to retrieve Eronâs body . . .â He grimaced as if the name had burnt his tongue. Kira took a breath and then took his hand.
âYouâre good. Go on.â The sky is falling, everything is fucked, but go on. Doesnât hurt a bit.
âHe gave us some time . . . thereâs something you should know, Kira. Eron went out with a small team, but he split off from them. And he didnât call it in when he located you.â
âWhy would he keep something like that under wraps?â Greta sniffed. Like, actually sniffed. Allergies or something.
Leona readied another spoonful of brown crap. âThat seems obvious to me.â She too sniffed. What was with the air in this camper?
âWant to share?â Letâs keep talking about Kiraâs dead lover, why donât we? Prick a few more holes undone.
The shit-coloured gunk on Leonaâs spoon seemed to intrigue her. âHe didnât want them to find you, Kira.â
âSo he could kill her himself?â Greta dove in there, blunt tongue thrashing open a couple more holes. The only one keeping silent was Nina, her deep-browns thoughtful.
I misdirected them, I wanted to . . . Kira blinked, the thread wrapped around her finger blurring. What? What did you want, Eron? âCause it sure as hell had seemed like it was her guts as a necklace.
Leona shook her head. âA battle was fought, and lost. That is what Bradley believes. An internal struggle that Eron could not hope to win. Kira, sometimes all the good intentions in the world are not enough.â
Ninaâs laughter fluttered, bitter and sharp. âNever enough. Not against the Four. If the reptile is correct, if your lover found a way to you even after walking alongside Agar all this time and did not tear your heart out the moment he saw you as they wished, then he has my respect. The Four are pestilence of the highest order, and no one is immune. You saw what just a passing glance was doing to the people in New Weston, the riots and the sudden outbreaks. The Four are hell on Earth. Iâve always hated those bastards.â
âRighto, I think she gets your drift.â Leona scowled. âCanât you see the girl is suffering?â
Suffering? Kira couldnât feel a thing. Not the mattress beneath her, or even Vailâs hand, still in hers.
